It was the season when odors rose like invisible flame against the landscape of suffocating heat. Beneath the burnt grass and withered kudzu, rodents, skunks, knots of insects were dying, for we saw daily buzzards circling the folds of the hills. The hills lay belly up and reddish against the skyline, the kudzu, with nothing to hold it, having slipped like a bathrobe downward. As if to anchor these dead or sleeping Buddhas, an occasional tree rose from their navels. Without the trees, they might have rolled down into the valley, leaving the horizon deserted and more still.
We waited and, although we were accustomed to waiting, this time it seemed to be for something ineffable, as for a revelation heat promises when it becomes intense enough to purify.

Almira had a very wide face, sallow and shiny: her lipstick never stayed on, she was the sort who ate off her lipstick without meaning to.
-Clarice Lispector

If I call stones blue it is because
blue is the precise word, believe me.
-Flaubert

You know your own music when you hear it one day.
-Brion Gysin

"I do not want to be the leader. I refuse to be the leader. I want to live darkly and richly in my femaleness. I want a man lying over me, always over me. His will, his pleasure, his desire, his life, his work, his sexuality the touchstone, the command, my pivot. I don't mind working, holding my ground intellectually, artistically; but as a woman, oh, God, as a woman I want to be dominated. I don't mind being told to stand on my own feet, not to cling, be all that I am capable of doing, but I am going to be pursued, fucked, possessed by the will of a male at his time, his bidding."

"We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are."
-Anais Nin

If we could sniff or swallow something that would, for five or six hours each day, abolish our solitude as individuals, atone us with our fellows in a glowing exaltation of affection and make life in all its aspects seem not only worth living, but divinely beautiful and significant, and if this heavenly, world-transfiguring drug were of such a kind that we could wake up next morning with a clear head and an undamaged constitution-then, it seems to me, all our problems (and not merely the one small problem of discovering a novel pleasure) would be wholly solved and earth would become paradise.
-Aldous Huxley

So is there in us a world of love to somewhat, though we know not what in the world that should be.
-Thomas Traherne

After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. -Aldous Huxley
